Many clothing catalogs or fitness programs ask you to take measurements on various parts of your body. Here is how to properly measure each area. The following tips will help you take basic clothing measurements.
All measurements are taken with the item lying flat; so if you measure yours while you are wearing them, your measurements might not match mine. I use a clothier’s tape measure (blue), but a carpenters tape will do; so long as it is wiped clean.
Shoulder to shoulder is measured at the top from seam to seam where the arms meet the shoulders and this will help determine free arm movement. The image below is showing 17 1/2":
Underarm to underarm is measured like the shoulders and this will help determine the chest fit and help arm movement. The below right image is showing 22":
Sleeves are measured from the shoulder seam to the tip of the cuff hem. The image below right is showing 22 1/2", but I would call it 22" just to be safe:
Overall length is measured down the front center of the shirt from the top button (collar) to the tip of the bottom hem. Bottom right is showing 27". Note the back is a little longer:
If the back of the shirt has exceptionally long tails, it is measured down the center from the top of the collar to the tail hem:
The Neck is measured from the center of the button hole, to the center of the button. The below right image is showing 14 7/8", but I would call it 14 3/4" just to be safe:
If measurement of the sleeve cuffs is mentioned, I measure them like the neck; from the center of the button hole to the center of the button. If the cuffs are button-less (for cuff links) then the measurement is from hole to hole.
